Steps to Calculate Molar Volume

Have a look at the simple process of the determining the substance molar mass in a solution.

  • Check the atomic weight, molar mass and density.
  • Multiply the atomic weight with the molar mass
  • Divide the product by density to know the molar volume.

What is Molar Volume?

The molar volume of a substance is the volume occupied by one mole of the substance at a given temperature and pressure. It is equal to the molar mass divided by the mass density.

AT STP, the molar volume is the volume occupied by one mole of a chemical compound. The SI unit of molar volume is cubic metres per mole.

Molar Volume Formula

The molar volume of a substance is directly proportional to the molar mass and inversly proportional to the mass density.

The molar volume formula at STP is expressed as

Vm = Molar mass/density

Where,

Vm is the molar volume

The standard temperature is 273 K or 0°C

Standard pressure is 1 atm or 760 mm Hg

Molar Volume Example:

Question: Calculate the molar volume for a sample of the molar mass of N2. If the gas density is 1.25 g/L?

Answer:

Given that,

Density of gas = 1.25 g/L

Molar mass of Nitrogen = 28.01 g/mol

Molar volume is Vm = Molar mass/density

= 28.01/1.25

= 22.408

Therefore, molar volume of N2 is 22.408 L.

Frequently Asked Question's on Molar Volume Calculator

1. How is molar volume calculated?

To get the molar volume of a substance, you have to know the atomic weight, molar mass and density. Multiply the molar mass with the atomic weight. Divide the product by the density to see the substance molar volume.

2. What is the molar volume of water?

At STP conditions, water occupies 1 cc per gram space. 1 mole of water weight is 18 grams. So, the molar volume of water is 18 cc.

3. What is the molar volume formuula?

The molar volume formula is Molar volume = (Atomic weight * Molar mass)/Density.

4. What is meant by molar volume?

Molar volume is defined as the volume of one mole of substance at a specific temperature and pressure.
